The clients of this townhouse wanted something different. The traditional formality of NYC townhomes did not appeal to them.
The problem here was reimagining how a townhouse could work to best accommodate their style of living, entertaining, creativity. The plan we created was a free-flowing layout with large continuous expanses of wall space. Built into the design was flexibility for the client to rearrange and reconfigure the space for parties, work, and bouts of creative inspiration.
The historic townhouse, originally built in the 1890’s, is in one of the city’s Landmark Districts, so we were careful to restore and protect every detail of the bay-front brownstone facade. While we restored on the outside, a hyper-tight modern insulating envelope was created that far exceeded the already stringent NYC building energy code.
