k-da Wins Best Boutique Design Firm – NYC

k-da was awarded Best Boutique Design Firm – NYC by BUILD Magazine. While we declined the offer to buy ourselves a trophy, we nonetheless enjoy the title!  While not the most prestigious of outfits, as architects, we are by nature slightly egotistic, so we are always happy to receive recognition.

The Real Deal announces the sale of our 13th Townhouse!

We are excited to announce that our West Village townhouse has sold – pre-completion!  The team on this project has been fantastic and shows what good collaboration can bring about.  We could not be prouder to be a part of this project.

It is rare to have a project sell pre-completion, and it is a testamate to the competence of the team that a buyer would put that much faith in the vision of the project.

NEW LOOK – SAME MISSION

We are upgrading our look!

Klaber Design + Architecture is now simply k-da.  Along with the new logo and name, we have launched a new website to better show our work, share our thoughts, and offer resources to our clients.

As part of a longer-term transition, this new branding is meant to commemorate the growth of the firm and carry us into the next chapter.

There have been many exciting milestones reached over the last 2 years and we have more projects and announcements on the way.  This change in branding is in no small part due to the OLD NEWS that Andrea Guatta Caldini is not only our director of design but a full partner.  Additionally, this year, we welcomed Tommaso Fruga to the team.

We hope you like the new look as much as we do, and we look forward to continuing to grow and providing the service and design we have become known for.

137 W 13TH FULLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

After some fits, starts, and hard negotiations to obtain our licensing agreements, we are thrilled to report that 137W13 is now fully under construction.  Demolition of the rear wall is complete!  The bricks have been saved and will not be combed through to find the best ones to construct the new facade.

We are now locating the structural elements on the interior and checking them against the plan.  Full evacuation should begin in the next 2 months – which is when the photographs start to get really fun.

Expect a bunch more updates as the construction progresses!

Andrea Guatta Caldini Joining the Firm as Partner and Director of Design

k—da is thrilled and proud to announce that Andrea Guatta Caldini is joining the firm as a Partner and our new Director of Design.  He has a passion and talent for beautiful, smart, and sustainable design and an impressive ability to deliver.

Andrea has been here since almost the beginning – playing an integral part in getting the firm up and running.  We are extremely excited to have him officially be joining in his full capacity. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Politecnico di Milano in Milan.  He is a Certified Passive House Designer, and most recently, he was a senior designer and project manager at The Turett Collaborative. We are excited about the start of this next chapter!

LPC Approves our GV Townhouse

We are excited and proud to announce that the Landmarks Preservation Commission has approved our Greenwich Village Townhouse with no modifications or exceptions on our first attempt!

The Landmarks approval process is laborious. It takes months of planning, work, and community meetings. Many times, even after all that work, the commission will still reject the application outright or ask for modifications to the design. Being asked to represent will typically cost the approval schedule a full month, which can be painful and costly to ownership.

We are proud of our team who worked hard to design something both distinctive and historically appropriate. This project was particularly challenging in this regard as our building is part of a row. We managed to create a design that both established the connection between us and our sisters yet also has a unique character.

Onwards and Upwards!

If you are thinking of building or renovating in a historic district, we are here to help.

Hot Property

KDA’s West Village townhouse is in the news!  While we have not started construction, the Ascend Group, Round Square Builders, and KDA partnership is getting some press.  137 13th street is part of a unique MEGA mansion development play as 133 and 135 are also available for purchase. We are pushing ahead with what is turning out to be a beautiful and unique single wide design, we are excited that this rare opportunity is getting some press.  While this rare opportunity would be a complicated, but we are excited to be in the mix, and have already started to sketch out what would be a truly one of a kind property in NYC!  If you are interested in learning more – please feel free to contact us.

Demolition begins at West Village Townhouse

We are very excited that a day after closing, demolition has begun on our new West Village townhouse!

KDA works with developers to accelerate construction timelines.  In this case, we were able to file for a demolition permit before the property was even acquired by our client.  This allowed for the contractor to start work less than 15 hours after closing papers were signed.  We understand that delay can be costly, especially when building in New York City. We work with clients and developers in the pre-planning and pre-design stages of projects to strategize about methods we can use to accelerate construction schedules.

This is an exciting project and we are sure to be giving frequent updates.
